Collaboration reflection

Having never collaborated on a photography project before I was totally unsure how this was going to work. Photography is very personal to me and to be honest, I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to the process.

The collaboration came together from me contacting David about an underwater image he had posted. Even though the image was different to my work, the feeling of the photograph seemed familiar.

We developed the idea of the project over messenger with the plan to pool our images in a web conference which we did. I put together a test sheet of the first page, seeing that some of the photos might work well positioned next to each other I showed David the first page and we agreed to have 6 images spread over 4 pages with two of our images having their own page and the other 4 images paired on two pages.

Visually, I feel like the grouping definitely worked, I wanted to be able to present a really coherent and synonymous feeling and narrative to the work. When presenting the work, on both occasions the module tutors mentioned that they would struggle to tell who’s work was who’s. On one hand I was happy to hear that as I had envisioned the collaboration as achieving one consistent body of work between the two of us, however further feedback suggesting that exploring images not so similar might have proven to be more rewarding is something I would agree with. I will bear this in mind for future collaborations.
