Life's a Pitch – Reflection

This week, the group pitched to Headway, unfortunately I was unable to take the time off work to attend the meeting. This was very disappointing as the pitch was presenting my video as an example of what we could do to advertise the charity group, as well as what we could produce with the members as part of the workshop.

Bloo presented the pitch and did a very good job, I was very happy with her delivery of the content.

I was interested to see that the other group on the Headway brief had decided to work for free, looking at the potential costs of the project I think we would have been happy to do it for cost as it is a charity. I don’t think we saw that coming and I feel that the response to that was diplomatic.

Ultimately I would be surprised if a group of students were actually given an ad campaign. As positive as the feedback was, I do not think we would get the pitch, why would they hire a group that has never worked together before over an actual ad agency or professional team? They actually have a budget to spend on the campaign so they are going to want to get something that is worth spending that money on. The campaign has been set out with the goal of drawing an audience, that is what the money is for.

If I could do anything differently, I think I would have wanted to push for solid idea sooner. We didn’t have a clear approach to the pitch until the week before pitching. I think also for the sake of time, I would probably be more direct in terms of voicing my opinion in the group as I felt unsure on how it would come across.

Overall I was happy with the content I created, however I got the impression that everyone felt like it was going to be necessary to have something they created on the pitch. If I had to do this again, I feel that I would only want one or two group members producing the work instead of all of us from the start. I think it would have been much more cohesive and we might have come to make something where the images and stills actually worked together. Then the group members not working on the creative could have spent their time putting together the pitch at an earlier point and had more time to practice it and iron out any parts that needed refinement. I think the hindsight for me is seeing the importance in different team rolls both creative and non-creative. If I was to run a team for another campaign, I would want one person focussing on data, another focussing on the pitch presentation, a team of two creating the content for the pitch but on a basis that the entire team was behind the direction.

I want to say a big thanks to Juanita, Bloo and Raeann who were really great, positive and thoughtful team members.
