When considering the way in which I present my work, I realise I haven’t really explored the use of video. I decided to look at how some of the artists I am inspired by use video in their work
Alex Prager is a film maker and photographer, her Play the Wind series was primarily a film first, then she has taken a selection of film stills as well as shots staged on set and turned that into prints for exhibiting.
The teaser trailer for Play the Wind is short and sweet, managing to set the tone for both the film and the stills. It is very much a movie trailer and whilst it could be used to promote an exhibition or book, I don’t think she would use it.
I was drawn to the tenderness shown in Nadav Kander’s Time Flies video for Age UK. A simple but ultimately powerful visualisation of ageing.
A different, perhaps more commonly used type of video is the interview based introduction Arles put together with Pixy Liao. This is a very direct way to introduce the artist and give an idea of their work.
All three uses of video are effective for different things, the Arles interview is perfect for introducing an artist to an audience for an exhibition, it really suits its use in promoting her to Arles audience. I am still unsure as to how I could use video currently, I found the Nadav Kander video very enchanting and inspiring, making a similar video for my project would be an interesting exercise whether it works or not. I think my project would benefit from something that portrays humanity and tenderness so honestly.
